Picture word matching

There are 780 matching tasks within the StepByStep software program. The aim of an exercise is to match a question to the target with multiple choice answers.

The exercises can be tailored by modifying the way that they are presented to a client. This allows the exercise to be targeted at an appropriate level.

A 2,4,6,8,12 multiple choice foil question appears in the centre which can be either picture, text, picture and text or sound.
Foils can be either picture, text, or picture and text.

Exercises are retrieved from the library based on:-
Targets all within a specific category, or
targets based on the same psycholinguistic features such as age of acquisition, imageability and frequency.

The target word is spoken on completion of the exercise
Each written or picture foil can be spoken

Repetition Exercises

Repetition exercises show a written word on the screen with or without the corresponding picture. The aim is to try to repeat the word. Each word is segmented into the individual phonemes enabling the user to focus on the begining, middle or end of words. The user is able to record their attempt and compare to the computer example. This greatly encourages self-monitoring. There are 135 different repetition exercises each containing on average 15 targets. The content of the exercise is based on:-

  • targets all within a specific category, or
  • targets based on the same psycholinguistic features such as age of acquisition, imageability and frequency, or
  • targets of a certain number of phonemes or initial phonemes.

An exercise is tailored to the individual by configuring the following parameters:-

  • whether the corresponding picture is shown with the written word.
  • whether to enable speech recording.

The person is able to record their own speech attempts by clicking on the microphone button. They can listen to their attempt and compare to the computer speech recording to promote self monitoring.  If they choose to save their reponse it will be saved to hard disc and available to be listened to by the therapist at a later date.

Spelling exercises

There are over 900 spelling exercises within StepByStep based on 6 different spelling tasks:-

  • Initial letter: requires the initial letter to be typed
  • Copying: shows the written word to be copied
  • Word Flash: shoes the written word for a predetermined period of time before it disappears
  • Anagram Solving: shows an anagram to be rearranged to spell the word
  • Dictation: The target word is spoken to be typed back
  • Whole word spelling: requires the word to be spelt from the picture only. There is the option to provide immediate feedback on each letter typed or to provide feedback only on completion of the task.

Exercises are retrieved from the library based on:-

  • a specific category e.g. food, clothing
  • letter length, initial letter,
  • psycholinguistic variables such as word frequency.

Configuration parameters

The exercise is tailored to the individual by configuring the following parameters:-

  • type of intervention and feedback provided
  • Upper/lower case keyboard
  • qwerty or alphabet keyboard
  • full size keyboard or reduced display showing only specific letters
  • written word with or without a picture display
  • target word spoken on completion

Key Features of StepByStep

StepByStep software has been specifically designed to be used independently and can therefore provide more intensive therapy. The sophisicated results capturing and updating over the internet ensures that the programme does not place extra time constraints on the therapist.

Key Features include:-

  • Programme tailored to the individual needs of the client: Exercises are allocated to a specific client on an individual basis, thus ensuring the appropriate level of activity.
  • Designed for people with aphasia to use independently where possible: A simple client interface enables many people with aphasia to use the programme independently at home thus enabling more intensive therapy to be delivered.
  • Sophisticated progress monitoring: The sophisticated recording and results management program dynamically monitors progress on an on-going basis. Automatic reporting on usage and performance can be printed out for inclusion in case-notes.
  • Internet Updating: A speech and language therapist is able to monitor progress and modify therapy using the Internet without the need for time consuming home visits to specifically update a client’s computer.
  • Improve self monitoring with speech recording functionality: The client is able to record their own speech attempts, listen and compare to the computer recording. Their attempts can be stored on thecomputer to be listened to by therapist at a later date and provide evidence of change over time for both the client and clinician.
